Rapala Max Rap 15cm 23gr / 17cm 28gr

Precio Medio: 15cm poco menos de 14€ 17cm poco menos de 15€
Average Price: 15cm just under 14€ 17cm just under 15€

(English Version and pics Below) (Fotos más abajo)

Empecemos.
Carrete: Shimano Twin Power 5000 FB. Hilo: Fireline fusionado 0,19mm.

Lance: 7,5
Accion: 8
Flotación: 9
Babero: 8,5
Triples: 8
Gama de colores: 6
Durabilidad de pintura: 1
Eficacia: 8,5

English
After several years starting with the “Long Cast” and progressing through the “X Rap” Rapala manages to evolve their lures at reasonable prices for sea spinning. Well nearly, they still have a problem which I shall explain.

The Max Rap 15 and 17cm has put Rapala among the most effective floating “slim” style lures on the market.

The colour range is good but still a little limited (Spain) although I’m sure this will shortly better bearing in mind their success.

We’ll begin.
Reel: Shimano Twin Power 5000 FB. Line: Fireline Fused 0.19mm.

With a 3mt rod casting these lures 50 – 60mt is easy (no wind). The balls inside (weight transfer) do their job perfectly and it’s rare to tangle, that is to say, that the line ends up under the front treble. This means they fly well and straight.

With one turn of the reel, or a tug, the interior balls place themselves in the swim position immediately and it stays floating in a perfect horizontal position.

The bib or lip is something between the Daiwa Saltiga and the Duo Tide Minnow Slim giving it a rolling action (tail action) either with calm or choppy seas. It dives to between 20 – 90cm depending on the speed of retrieval or position of the rod (tip high or low). When you stop it floats up slowly in a perfect horizontal position almost like a suspended lure.

The trebles are good VMC. Sharp, strong and resistant to the saline though after use a wash in fresh water does them good (as with all).

The problem (there’s always one) is the paint job. The paint starts to flake and peel off much too soon so for the moment buying the ones with less paint and opting for the more holographic is better.

Valuation:

Cast: 7.5
Action: 8
Buoyancy: 9
Bib / lip: 8.5
Trebles: 8
Colour range: 6
Paint durability: 1
Effectiveness: 8.5
Price: 9
Availability: 9.5 (Spain)

Las Cosas Cambian / Things Change

(English version below)

Bienvenido Miguel. Frank.

Carrete Shimano Twin Power 5000 FB.

PD. Las Sarretas tendrán que esperar.

I Take this opportunity to welcome another victim of the fishing virus.

Welcome Miguel. I think you have great taste in choosing blogs to follow. If I’m not mistaken you suffer from SPIN Fever. Here as you shall see you’ll not find a remedy for such ailment which is usually chronic, but I hope you find support and empathy from all of us, as well as ideas to alleviate it slightly. My salute.

Welcome Miguel. Frank

Shimano Twin Power 5000 FB reel. Fireline XDS 0.16mm with a Seagaur Soft 0.33mm leader. Rod, Barros Laredo 300 Spinner. The sea calming after a couple of days of strong waves between 3 and 4 metres. A clear sky but without any moon and pitch black. I go in search of the Pollack for my article. I decide to go to some rocks where they generally bite well. There’s a lot of loose seaweed. I try to find a spot where I don’t accumulate seaweed within 4 turns of the reel. I try everything from my previous entry in this blog. At last after about an hour and a half I get a hit. It doesn’t fight like a Pollack but I can’t confirm it, it gets free, it wasn’t anything of great size but gets me thinking, what if...... I change the lure to a Rapala 15cm yellow Max Rap. The tide’s been coming in for about an hour now. I think, “I should change the spool to a heavier line”, but don’t. Another change of position and I place myself facing the open sea but can’t see a thing. I’m a little nervous because the sea is still quite rough and I feel unprotected. I cast, a slow retrieve with stops to avoid snagging on some rocks I know are right in front of me. Another 3 or 4 casts and hit! It doesn’t seem like a big deal, 2 or 3 turns of the reel and it shoots off like an F1 car. “Why didn’t I change the spool?” I loosen the drag while a thousand things fly through my mind, the line, the knots, the rocks, the waves I can hear crashing like thunder but can’t see then I hear the voice of the master Jedi Carlos AKA sargoloco, “the force is with you” I take control of the situation and direct my adversary to calmer waters away from the rocks. He makes me go around the rocks as I jump from one to another (a good thing I know them like the back of my hand). At last I see it. It’s already tired and I manage to keep its’ head out of the water. A wave is on my side and spits it into a shallow pool. I reach for it, grab it under the gills and it’s miiiiine!

10 minutes that I dedicate to Carlos. Thank you Carlos this one’s for you.

See Pcture.

PS. The Pollack will have to wait.

Sarreta al Spinning / Spinning for Pollack

Sarreta is the name given to small Pollack in Galicia (Pollachius Pollachius) up to 1.5 – 2 Kg.

Abadejo / Pollack

Small Pollack is usually found in areas with a lot of seaweed or ports.

In the illustration is the most traditional rig used. For the leader it’s better to use Fluorocarbon but not essential. The worm (Corean or Rag Worm with the head up). The retrieval is slow and consistent.

In the video I give some other ideas using lures and Buldo (sinking) which can also be very effective.

Chivos

What is a “Chivo”?

Well as you can see they’re basically a lead weight with various shapes (fish, arrow, delta) with the chin hair of a goat (thus the name “Chivo” in Galician) and two hooks attached. Today they’re known in most of Spain.
I in particular like light Chivos between 30 and 50 gr, but you can get them in 100 and 120 gr. They work really well on the rock and cast much more than normal lures. They cost a lot less and it isn’t so painful when you snag and lose them. It’s a bit like horizontal jigging but slower. Highly recommended.

We also have Punk Chivos. These are made with coloured artificial hair. Very effective in areas with a lot of seaweed.

Bienvenido / Welcome

.

Greetings Cesar.

Cesar also suffers the spinning fever and in his blog he shows the symptoms of this highly contagious fever (http://carqueixanomar.blogspot.com/  or  “carquiexa” in my blog list). I believe the only cure is age or rheumatism, but as with many others, the cure is worse than the desease.

Happy Fishing Cesar.

Spinning desde Roca / Spinning on the Rocks

The attack zone is usually all around the rocks. You have to risk and it’s very possible to lose lures. The longer the lure is in the attack zone the greater the chance of fishing.

This is only to give you an idea. It isn’t an exact science.
It all depends on how the wind is blowing and the currents. Here I have you casting from left to right but, of course, it can be the other way round.
You need to try and maintain the lure in the attack zone for the longest time possible.
You can stop retrieving every now and again and bring the lure with tugs.

Mochila Sling de Rapala / Rapala Sling Back Pack

The Rapala “Sling” back pack is comfortable and practical.

Contains two compartments with two boxes fixed with Velcro for lures

It has a pocked for scissors with security clip and a small zipped pocked for documentation or in my case a penknife. It also has another much bigger zipped pocket for lines or boxes etc.

With a half turn the larger pocket is at hand and when you open the compartments it becomes a small table which is very practical for choosing or changing lures.

Lo bueno y lo malo / The good and the bad

The good is that it’s practical, very light, it floats and the plastic boxes are held in position with Velcro so they can be removed to wash or to change the box.

The original boxes are deep enough to put my Twin Power 5000 spools, but the compartments inside the box are too short for the longer lures.

It isn’t designed for salt water so even though the zips are plastic the buckles aren’t and salt can accumulate and the clip for the scissors can rust.

Soluciones / Solutions

Everything has a remedy and in this case a very easy one.

First, The zip and clip problem is solved by greasing them up. The plastic box problem, I changed one of the boxes for a “Plano” box, added some Velcro to the bottom and that’s it. This one we see in the pictures has been with me for about four years and it’ll last another four or more. If only everything were that easy!
